Mitty Wins WCAL and CIF State Championship

For the sixth year in a row, coach Bret Almazan-Cezar's Monarchs scored a trifecta en route to the state finals, winning the West Catholic Athletic League, Central Coast Section and Northern California championships.
With O'Neill and Taylor Smith the only seniors, the future looks bright for Mitty. Juniors on the team were Williams, Graven, Caloiaro, Kaitlyn Connolly, Lindsey Dowd, Ryan Shaffer, Shannon Fleming, Holly Mueller, Bennett Jones and Brittany Bozzini. Sophomores were Jacqui Lewis and Ronni Lewis.

Palo Alto ran into Archbishop Mitty in the Central Coast Section girls volleyball Div. II semifinals. The Vikings battled the nation's best team dead-even for one game, but that's not what it would take to pull off a monumental upset as the Monarchs won 25-14, 25-23, 25-14.

A 10-2 midgame run for Mitty broke the first game wide open. Williams was blasting balls downward, Smith and Brittany Bozzini were blocking fiercely in the middle and Shannon Flemming aided in the attack. Whitson was the sole bright light for Paly.

Mitty headed into the CIF Div. II State Championships as No. 1 team in the FAB 50, a spot it occupied for the previous five weeks. The team that took the floor at the Bren Events Center at UC Irvine was not the same team that No. 2 La Costa Canyon (Carlsbad) defeated at the Durango Classic.

High school coaches who played the Monarchs more than once this season also took notice. The general consensus among coaches was, "They were a good team to start the season, but the second time we played them, they were way better."

College coaches took notice as well. Coaches from the Big West, Pac10 and the WCC who watched the CIF State Championships commented, "Archbishop Mitty is fantastic," and "It is a very recruitable team."
